Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stressed the need to end foreign interference in Libya as a prerequisite for resolving the crisis that has been going on for more than thirteen years.

This statement came during his reception of Stephanie Khoury, Acting Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, where the two parties discussed the complexities of the current situation and the impact of foreign interference in fueling conflicts.

Attaf pointed out that foreign interference only deepens divisions among the Libyan people, stressing that Algeria renews its call to international parties to stop these interferences and support the efforts of the United Nations to establish stability.

The meeting also discussed the delay in the electoral entitlement in Libya and the institutional challenges that prevent achieving the desired stability.

The Algerian minister stressed the importance of avoiding turning the electoral entitlement into an end in itself, stressing the need to preserve and consolidate the ceasefire agreement, and the need to continue national reconciliation efforts, which are essential to unify the Libyan ranks and overcome the ordeal.

It is noteworthy that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune had previously made it clear that elections are the only way to legitimize the Libyan government, stressing the importance of returning to the Libyan people to hold free and fair elections.

Algeria seeks to play the role of mediator in the Libyan crisis, as it confirmed its readiness to contribute to finding peaceful solutions to the conflict, as Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf indicated in February of this year Algeria’s readiness to contribute to international and regional efforts to resolve the crisis, including supporting the efforts of the United Nations.
