Algeria ranked seventh in the world in liquefied natural gas production, with an annual production of 25.5 million tons, making it the first African country to achieve this classification.

A report issued by the International Gas Union (IGU) revealed that Algeria surpassed Nigeria and Egypt, which ranked eighth and tenth, respectively.

The United States of America topped the list of countries that produce the most liquefied gas at a rate of 91.4 million tons annually, followed by Australia and Qatar with production of 87.6 and 77.1 million tons, respectively, as these three countries together account for more than half of global production.

Algeria also recorded a remarkable growth in its exports of liquefied gas by the end of 2023, as an additional 2.88 million tons were exported compared to the previous year, bringing its total exports to 13 million tons. This increase raised Algeria’s market share to 3% of the global liquefied gas market.

In the regional context, LNG trade exchanges between Algeria and Turkey (4.29 million tons) and Algeria and France (3.20 million tons) are among the largest trade flows between Africa and Europe.

Algeria’s annual production has stabilized at about 137 billion cubic meters in recent years, up from 127 billion cubic meters in 2015, and by 2023 Algeria recorded the export of 13 million tons of liquefied gas, placing it in seventh place in the world as one of the largest exporters.

Algeria aims to raise its production level to 200 billion cubic meters annually by 2028, with expectations of future challenges related to maintaining these levels after 2030 in conjunction with meeting domestic demand and enhancing exports.
