Algeria’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ammar Ben Jama, said on Monday that his country is preparing for a next step in the UN Security Council, regarding the recognition of the State of Palestine as a full member of the UN body.
After the vote on a Security Council resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza, Ben Jammeh said that “Algeria will soon return to address the Security Council, once again, so that the State of Palestine is in its natural place, a full member of the United Nations.”
On Monday, the U.N. Security Council adopted its first resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after the United States abstained from voting, unlike previous vetoes and overturned similar resolutions.
The resolution, which was supported by 14 members to one abstention, “demands an immediate ceasefire during the month of Ramadan” that began two weeks ago, “leading to a permanent ceasefire” and “demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
Ben Jammeh referred to what he described as “flexibility and constructive work that enabled us today to adopt a long-awaited resolution. In order to put an end to the massacres that have been going on for more than five months, during which the Palestinian people have experienced all forms of suffering and suffering.
“Finally, the Security Council rises to the size of its responsibilities as the primary responsible for maintaining international peace and security and responds to the demands of the peoples and the international community,” he said.
The Algerian delegate condemned what he described as “the tendentious and despicable campaigns against UN Secretary-General António Guterres”. “We renew support for his noble position,” he said.
Referring to Algeria’s “commitment to its positions”, the delegate said: “When voting on the draft resolution I submitted last month, we promised that we will not tire and will not get bored, until the Security Council assumes its full and undiminished responsibilities. We promised that we would knock again on the doors of the Security Council. And here we are today, with all the countries elected to the Council.”
Bin Jama considered the adoption of a ceasefire resolution “a clear message to the Palestinian people, that the international community in all its factions feels your pain and will not abandon you,” noting that “the adoption of today’s resolution is only the beginning towards achieving the hopes of the Palestinian people.”
The delegate held the Security Council responsible for “obliging the Israeli occupier to this decision, to stop the killing immediately, without conditions and to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people.”
