Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf discussed at the ministry’s headquarters with Nigerien Foreign Minister Bakary Yawou Sangaré, who arrived in Algeria as part of a working visit, bilateral relations and the development of the situation in the Sahel region.
The two ministers held lengthy talks focused on assessing cooperation relations between the two countries in various fields, especially the trans-Saharan road, because of its role in breaking the isolation and developing the entire Sahel region,” the Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement”.
The two ministers also reviewed developments in the region, especially the crisis in Niger, where Minister Bakary Yawou Sangari praised Algeria’s role in supporting his country to get out of the current crisis.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced earlier the summoning of Mali’s ambassador to Algeria, Mahamani Amadou Maiga, regarding the recent developments in this country, in reaction to Bamako’s summons of the Algerian ambassador to it, El Hausas Raiche.
Algeria is leading a mediation for the return of peace to northern Mali after the “Algiers Agreement” signed in 2015.
Mali accused Algeria of interfering in its internal affairs, after what it described as the recent unfriendly actions of the Algerian authorities, by holding repeated meetings without the knowledge or interference of the Malian authorities with parties and personalities known for their hostility to Mali under the cover of the peace process and warned that such actions would spoil the good relations between the two countries.
On Tuesday, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune received Malian Imam Mahmoud Dicko, a highly influential cleric in Mali known for his criticism of Mali’s military council.
