The Algerian Independent National Election Authority announced that the number of candidates for the presidential elections scheduled to be held next September has reached 31 candidates by the end of June.
The lineup of candidates included prominent and new figures on the political scene, and the head of the National Elections Authority, Mohamed Sharafi, stated that the deadline for submitting candidacy applications is July 18, after which the process of reviewing and studying the files will begin, which will continue until July 27.
The final list of accepted candidates will be announced and will then be submitted to the Constitutional Court for final approval of their eligibility to compete in the presidential race.
Among the candidates, names with political weight stand out, such as the Secretary General of the Labor Party and former candidate for the 2009 and 2014 presidential elections, Louisa Hanoun, and the head of the Hamas Islamic Movement, Abdel Ali Sharif, in addition to Youssef Aouchish from the Joint Forces Front, Saida Negza, President of the General Confederation of Algerian Institutions, and lawyer Zubaida Assoul. .
It is likely that current President Abdelmadjid Tebboune will announce his candidacy for a second presidential term, which will intensify the competition in these elections, which come after Tebboune’s decision last March to hold early elections set for September 7, 2024.
