Former Malian Grand Mufti Sheikh Mahmoud Dicko, who was one of the direct causes of the deterioration of the relationship between the military transitional authority and the Algerian government earlier this year, is currently visiting Algeria after being received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
The sheikh of the Kantian Order is leading a strong opposition movement against Mali’s ruler, Assimi Goïta.
The “Algeria Mosque” broadcasted, on its social media account, a video of Sheikh Dicko giving a lesson, Sunday night – Monday, before performing the evening and Taraweeh prayers. He also posted photos of himself with the dean of the religious edifice, Muhammad al-Mamoun al-Qasimi al-Hasani.
“I salute the Algerian people, their government and President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for the hospitality, good reception and care, which, if anything, indicates the brotherhood that binds Algeria to the countries of the region,” Dicko told the university’s media department.
Mali’s governor accused Algeria of supporting the opposition and threatened an immediate halt to the “peace deal” signed in Algiers in 2015. What’s more, Algerians have threatened to host a separatist organization demanding Kabylie independence, in response to visits by its opponents to the northern neighbor.
In recent years, Algeria has led mediation between the two parties, but has not been able to resolve their differences. “It has never failed to work to implement the Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, with sincerity, goodwill and unwavering solidarity towards brotherly Mali,” its Foreign Ministry said after the cancellation of the agreement, warning of “the repercussions of the decision on the security situation, and its danger for Mali itself, the entire region that aspires to peace and security, and the international community.”
