Algeria looks forward to the commitment of all parties to the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
During his address to the Security Council, the Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Ammar Ben Jammeh, stressed the need to implement the Council’s resolutions, stressing that Algeria will continue to work to realize the hopes of the Palestinian people.
Benjama thanked the members of the Security Council for their cooperation during the talks, explaining that Algeria’s return to the Council with other elected countries sends a strong message to the Palestinian people that the international community will not abandon them.
The Algerian official considered that the adoption of the new resolution represents a first step towards achieving the hopes of the Palestinian people, expressing his hope that all parties will abide by the resolution and that the violence will stop immediately.
He stressed the need for the Security Council to ensure the effective implementation of its resolutions.
The resolution, submitted by the 10 non-permanent members of the Council, including Algeria, received 14 votes in favour and the United States abstained.
The resolution stressed the urgent need to expand the flow of humanitarian assistance to civilians throughout the Gaza Strip and to enhance their protection and demands the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and the guarantee of aid access.
