Algeria has criticized the administrative mechanisms of the African Union, demanding radical reforms that preserve the sovereignty and dignity of member states and enhance the effectiveness of international partnerships.
These statements were made by the Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf, during his participation in the 45th session of the Executive Council of the African Union, held in Accra, Ghana.
Attaf stressed the need to develop a comprehensive strategic vision for the partnerships linking the Union with international actors, stressing the importance of these partnerships being balanced and respecting African dignity and sovereignty, and called for strengthening the Union’s role as an essential and effective party in all existing or future partnerships.
On the other hand, the Minister expressed his concern about the rapid expansion and expansion of the network of international partnerships, which sometimes occurs without sufficient participation from member states, which negatively affects the credibility and prestige of the continental organization.
Attaf also pointed out the need for urgent action to overcome the blockage faced by the draft policy and strategic framework for partnerships, expressing his regret for the policy of excluding some active members.
He stressed the need for sustainable self-financing for the African Union, to ensure the independence of its decisions and respect for the principles of sovereign equality and shared benefit.
Algeria criticized the limited role played by the African Union in combating terrorism and organized crime, noting that current mechanisms such as AFRIPOL (the African Police Cooperation Mechanism) need to be strengthened and developed to achieve more effective results.
