Algeria has appointed new consuls in Morocco’s Oujda and Casablanca, despite severed ties between the two countries.
The appointment is part of a series of diplomatic measures involving 24 ambassadors, 15 consuls general and nine consuls.
The changes included Algeria’s ambassadors to most Sahel countries, Egypt, Italy, Brazil, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Zambia, and Ghana.
The post of Algerian ambassador to Mali is one of the most significant changes, and the current ambassador, El Hawas Riache, was relieved and replaced by Algeria’s ambassador to Peru, Kamel Ratiba, who was appointed ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary in Bamako.
The appointment comes after a diplomatic crisis between Algeria and Mali led to the withdrawal of their ambassadors, after the transitional government in Bamako protested Algerian interference in its internal affairs.
In August 2021, Algeria announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Morocco, and its consulate in Casablanca represented it with the aim of serving Algerian citizens in Morocco and communicating with Rabat.
