The Algerian Ministry of Defense announced the arrest of five individuals suspected of belonging to terrorist groups active in the Sahel region of Africa.

The arrests were the result of two separate security operations carried out between the twentieth and twenty-third of this June, in the operational sector of Bordj Badji Mokhtar and the military sector of Tamanrasset, within the sixth military region in the far south of the country.

The first operation resulted in the arrest of four people in the Tamanrasset region, where machine guns, pistols, and quantities of ammunition were seized, while the second operation, which was carried out in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, led to the arrest of the fifth suspect.

The Algerian Ministry of Defense confirmed in its statement that these operations are evidence of the effectiveness of the security strategy followed by the People’s National Army, and reflect the tireless efforts made by the armed forces to secure the country and enhance security and stability throughout the national territory.

It is noteworthy that the African Sahel region suffers from the spread of a number of terrorist groups, some of which are local, and others linked to international terrorist organizations. The most prominent of these groups is Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, which was founded in 2002 and is active in the Maghreb region, launching attacks on civilians and military personnel in Algeria, Mali and Niger. And Burkina Faso.

There is also the Ansar Dine group, which split from Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb in 2012, and took control of the city of Timbuktu in Mali for a short period, and the Almoravid group, which merged with the Ansar Dine group in 2013, and is considered responsible for many attacks in Mali and Burkina Faso, and the Islamic State organization in Greater Sahara (ISIS), which appeared in 2015, is present in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, and launches bloody attacks against civilians and military personnel.

The Boko Haram group, which is active in northeastern Nigeria, is also widespread, launching terrorist attacks on civilians and kidnapping children. It has also carried out attacks in neighboring countries such as Cameroon and Niger, and the Macina Liberation Group, active in central Mali.
