Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf discussed with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry the developments of the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since October 7.
The talks came on the sidelines of Attaf’s participation in the 161st extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level in Cairo, according to a statement by the Algerian Foreign Ministry.
The statement stressed that the two ministers “discussed developments in the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip, as well as issues related to inter-coordination at the continental level.”
According to the statement, the two ministers touched on “the distinguished relations of brotherhood and cooperation between the two brotherly countries and ways to push them to wider levels in the context of preparing for the upcoming bilateral elections.”
Last Tuesday, during an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Attaf called for severing all forms of diplomatic, economic and security relations with Israel.
Of the 22 Arab countries, five – Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco – have declared official relations with Israel, which has held territory in Palestine, Syria and Lebanon for decades.
The ongoing war in the Gaza Strip has led to the deaths of more than 30,000 Palestinians, mostly children and women, an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure and property, according to Palestinian and UN data.
