Divorces in Algeria have risen to exceed 33% of marriages, with 93,400 cases recorded in 2023.
The Algerian Bureau of Statistics revealed these disturbing numbers, which show an increase compared to 76,000 divorces in 2021 and 84,000 cases in 2022.
Lawyer and psychologist Ahmed Gouraya pointed out that these numbers exceeded the red line, which calls for sounding the alarm.
Gouraya explained that the material and social changes in the current era have negatively affected family relationships, as the material aspect overshadowed the relationships, which led to changing the role of women and reducing their status.
Gouraya emphasized that material and moral independence made women believe that they were achieving development, which led to complex problems in marital relations. He highlighted that among the factors leading to divorce were the lack of social and cultural equality between spouses, lack of interest in others, and preoccupation with other matters.
Gouraya revealed that marital monotony or boredom, lack of trust between spouses, and doubt seeping into each other’s psyche are among the reasons that lead to emotional divorce and alienation between spouses.
Gouraya suggested some solutions to avoid divorce, such as renewing the spouses’ lives through a repeat honeymoon or moving away for a short period to promote emotional and psychological rejuvenation.
Gouraya called for benefiting from ancient Algerian family traditions, where it was advised to take the wife to her family’s home for a short period when problems occurred, which promotes psychological and emotional renewal between the spouses.
