The Assistant Public Prosecutor at the Sidi M’hamed Court in Algiers announced the referral of 21 defendants to the judiciary in a case related to the seizure of a large shipment of weapons and ammunition at the port of Bejaia.
During a press conference, the spokesman explained that on August 4, while processing a sea voyage for passengers on a foreign ship at the port of Bejaia, the person called “Z. M.”, who was accompanied by his wife, was subjected to investigation.
During a routine customs inspection, the authorities discovered a large shipment of weapons and ammunition, including 11 16 mm weapons, 7 automatic pistols of various types, and 3 12 mm pieces, for a total of 21 weapons.
The Assistant Public Prosecutor added that the investigations led by the judicial police services revealed that the smuggled shipment had been purchased from a person working outside Algeria, where it was arranged with a terrorist group active abroad headed by “Z. Kh.” and “L. L.” .
Investigations revealed the existence of electronic communications with leaders of terrorist organizations, as well as posts on social media indicating that orders were received from the “MAK” organization and that financial funding was received from leaders of terrorist organizations abroad, with the aim of carrying out terrorist acts inside Algeria.
