Imad Al-Trabelsi, Minister of the Interior of the Libyan National Unity Government in Tripoli, supervised the reopening of the Ras Jedir border crossing between Libya and Tunisia, in the presence of his Tunisian counterpart, Khaled Al-Nouri.

Trabelsi stressed that Libya will not accept and will not allow the crossings to be exploited for smuggling fuel, drugs, and weapons, and revealed plans to organize other crossings between the two countries during the coming period, with the aim of facilitating the movement of citizens and trade exchange.

Trabelsi explained that the opening of the crossing came after securing the border in cooperation with the Libyan Army and the Tunisian National Guard and expressed his readiness to work and cooperate with the Libyan Arab Armed Forces headed by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar in the east of the country to secure the southern borders with Chad, Niger and Sudan.

The crossing witnessed its reopening on June 13 for humanitarian, urgent, emergency and diplomatic cases, and it was scheduled to be opened to the public on the 20 of the same month.

The closure of the road leading to the crossing by protesters caused the postponement of its opening, before the government reached understandings with them.

The “Ras Jedir” crossing is considered the main land crossing for commodity exchange and citizen movement between Libya and Tunisia, and is located in the far west of Libya, near the coastal city of Zuwara.

The crossing faced a problem regarding its security, followed by gunfire last March between military and security forces from Zuwara and the law enforcement department.

The Libyan Ministry of Interior announced the withdrawal of its members working in the Port Security Directorate, the Police Station, and the Passports and Nationality Service, which led to the closure of the crossing and its economic impact on nearby cities on both sides.

In previous statements, Trabelsi accused gangs from the region of smuggling subsidized fuel from Libya to Tunisia through the port. The Ministry assigned the Law Enforcement Department to secure the crossing and announced the formation of a joint force and a security room to undertake this, consisting of army and police forces.
