Sudanese Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan invited leaders of political blocs and forces to Port Sudan to consult on appointing a prime minister and forming an independent government.
Al-Burhan held two meetings with political leaders in Port Sudan on Wednesday and Thursday, where he informed them of his intention to appoint a prime minister within two weeks to give him the task of forming a government with full powers to manage the state until a Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue conference is held to discuss the post-war phase and internal and external challenges.
Political sources told Al Jazeera Net that the meeting also discussed the conference that Egypt called for to be held in Cairo on July 6 to discuss ways to resolve the Sudanese crisis in both its military and political aspects.
The leaders of the political blocs held a separate meeting on Thursday evening, where opinions differed about the duration of the government and the period of its mandate, and some of them linked their political support to the condition of agreeing on the government’s program.
Al-Burhan faces a challenge as the armed movements in Darfur cling to the ministerial quotas stipulated in the Juba Peace Agreement signed in October 2020, which granted them 25% of the seats in the Council of Ministers, which will make the government composed of independent competencies and representatives of the armed movements.
The list of invited leaders included: the head of the Democratic Forces of Freedom and Change Alliance, Jaafar Al-Mirghani, the head of the National Consensus Bloc, Mubarak Al-Fadil Al-Mahdi, the head of the National Movement Alliance and leader of the Liberation and Justice Party, Al-Tijani Al-Sisi, the head of the National Forces Coordination, Malik Aqar, the head of the Justice and Equality Movement, Jibril Ibrahim, and the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement. Sudan Liberation Minni Arko Minawi, and the head of the Supreme Council of Beja and Independent Amoudiyat Council, Muhammad Al-Amin Turk.
A committee headed by Malik Agar is working to submit a list of candidates for prime minister, which includes prominent figures such as the Minister of Finance and head of the Justice and Equality Movement, Jibril Ibrahim, the former Secretary-General of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the diplomat and former professor of international law at the University of Khartoum, Kamel Idris, and the Governor of Khartoum State, Ahmed Othman Hamza.
The sources indicated that the appointment of the Prime Minister requires an amendment to the constitutional document, which requires a joint meeting between the Sovereignty and the Council of Ministers.
In a remarkable development, the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), threatened to form an authority in the areas under his control if Al-Burhan forms a government in Port Sudan, stressing that Khartoum will remain the capital and will not allow the establishment of any alternative capital.
