On Saturday in the far western city of Zawiya, violent clashes between armed groups resulted in deaths and injuries, according to official sources and local press reports.

The head of the Libyan government in charge of parliament, Osama Hammad, issued a call for an immediate ceasefire in the city, calling for calm and dialogue between the conflicting parties.

Hammad expressed deep concern about the current situation, where heavy and medium weapons were used in the clashes, causing heavy human and material losses.

As part of the humanitarian efforts, the Libyan Red Crescent called for a ceasefire and the opening of a safe passage to evacuate families trapped in the areas of clashes, while stressing the need to protect lives and property.

These latest clashes in Zawiya are indicative of continuing internal divisions and conflicts in Libya, where rival armed groups are battling for control and official authorities failing to enforce security and stability.

Since the fall of former leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has been plagued by chaos and divisions, with the country run by two rival governments, one in the capital Tripoli and the other in the east, as well as multiple armed groups vying for influence.

The current situation shows an urgent need for international and domestic efforts to bring peace and stability to Libya and avoid further descent into chaos and violence.
