Informed sources in Mauritania have revealed shocking details about the deal announced months ago to set up an assembly plant for American drones in the country.
The sources revealed that the base in question will be a staging point for US sorties in North and West Africa, near the border, which means that Algeria and other countries may be concerned with the issue of espionage.
According to the sources, the base will be dedicated to bringing in drone spare parts and installing them on site, in preparation for launching reconnaissance sorties in the area.
The deal was coordinated at the Mauritanian level by the Mauritanian ambassador to the United States, Mohamed Lamine Ould Haysen, and informed sources say that the Mauritanian authorities received large sums of money in exchange for accepting the deal.
For its part, the Washington Post revealed the US administration’s decision to expand its secret air networks in African countries, with the aim of monitoring al-Qaeda and other military movements.
The White House sees Mauritania as a potential alternative base to Niger, given its strategic location near the coastal Sahara and its intersection with the Malian border.
