The Moroccan Olympic team achieved a historic victory over its Argentine counterpart, 2-1, in the first round of the group stage of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Moroccan team ended the first half ahead with a late goal scored by Sofiane Rahimi after wonderful teamwork, in the “45+2” minute.
In the second half, Rahimi increased the Moroccan team’s lead by scoring the second goal from a penalty kick (50).
Then the Argentine national team rose up to reduce the difference in the 68th minute with a goal by substitute Simeone, and then equalized in the last minute of stoppage time (90 + 16) through Christian Medina.
Before the referee confirmed the validity of Argentina’s second goal, about twenty Moroccan fans stormed the field, and cans and cups were thrown, forcing the referee, who counted 15 minutes of stoppage time, to ask the players to return to the dressing rooms.
There was confusion about whether or not the match would end, and the International Olympic Committee website indicated that it had been stopped.
After about two hours of pause, the players of both teams returned to the field, and the referee, after returning to the VAR technology, decided to cancel Argentina’s second goal due to offside and ordered the remaining three minutes of the match to be completed without the presence of fans, as Morocco succeeded in maintaining its lead to achieve a historic victory. Over Argentina 2-1.
This is the first time that Morocco has achieved victory in its opening match at the Olympic Games.
