The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, has called on Sudan’s warring parties to cease fighting, expressing grave concern over the deteriorating security situation in the country.
The call came in a written statement issued by Faki, where he expressed concern about the spread of fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces to the city of Wad Madani in Gezira state in central Sudan and the Abu Shouk camp for displaced people in North Darfur.
Faki called on the army and the Rapid Support Forces to immediately stop the war and participate in peace negotiations and stressed the readiness of the African Union to cooperate with regional parties to end the conflict in Sudan.
Sudan’s army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo (Hemedti), have been fighting a war since mid-April, killing more than 12,000 people and displacing more than 6 million people, according to United Nations statistics.
As the fighting moves to Gezira state, the clashes expand to join the nine states that are witnessing ongoing fighting: Khartoum, the five states of the Darfur region, and the three states of the Kordofan region.
