Congolese Foreign Minister Jean-Claude Gakoso, Chairperson of the African Union High-Level Panel on Libya, confirmed that efforts are continuing to convene the Libyan National Reconciliation Conference.
Gakoso explained that the national reconciliation process is essential before any elections are held in Libya, adding that to achieve stability in Libya, the conference must be integrated and include all Libyan parties.
The Congolese minister noted that the resignation of Abdoulaye Bathili, the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, will slow down the UN’s efforts, but the African Union is committed to continuing to work towards reconciliation in Libya, and to reach out to countries and forces that exert influence in the Libyan arena.
The remarks came after the postponement of the conference, which was scheduled for April 28, following the resignation of Batelli, which he attributed to differences between the Libyan parties, and informed the Security Council that the Libyan National Reconciliation Conference had been postponed indefinitely.
