Abir Moussi, an opponent of Tunisian President Kais Saied who has been detained since the fall of last year, has submitted her candidacy for the Tunisian presidential elections scheduled for October 6.
Moussi’s candidacy file was submitted by six members of her defense committee to the High Elections Authority, according to statements made by her lawyer to local media, where she will face President Saied, who is seeking a second term.
Moussi heads the Free Destourian Party, which describes itself as the successor to former Tunisian leaders Habib Bourguiba and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
The criteria for accepting candidacies are strict, requiring endorsements from ten parliamentarians, forty elected local officials, or ten thousand voters, in addition to the need to collect at least five hundred endorsements in each electoral district, and the deadline for submitting nominations ends next Tuesday at 5 pm GMT.
Abir Moussi is a politician who began her political career during the rule of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, where she was a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party. After the Tunisian revolution in 2011, she re-formed her party under the name of the Free Constitutional Party and became its leader.
Before the revolution, Moussi was an active member of the ruling party and is known for her opposition to the political Islamic approach adopted by the Ennahda Movement in Tunisia. She led her party in the parliamentary elections and succeeded in achieving significant progress, as her party won a significant number of seats in parliament.
