The young Chinese player Zhang Zhijie, 17 years old, died tragically while participating in the Asian Junior Badminton Championships, which was held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
The incident occurred when Zhang suffered a sudden fall on the field while facing Japanese player Kazuma Kawano, which led to him losing consciousness in the middle of the match.
Medical teams intervened immediately, as Zhang was treated on the field before being transferred to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, the player was declared dead after being transferred to Sardjito General Hospital, where tests confirmed that the cause of death was sudden cardiac arrest.
A video spread on social media platforms, recording the moment the player fell, which sparked widespread sympathy for the painful event.
The Chinese Badminton Association offered its condolences to Zhang’s family, praising his short and promising career in the world of sports, and describing him as having loved badminton and possessing remarkable athletic talent.
