The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) issued a statement talking about the humanitarian crisis facing Chad as a result of Sudanese refugees, and a third of its population is in need of food assistance.
In its statement issued on Saturday, the office added that Chad is witnessing an exacerbation of crises due to several factors, including climate change, insecurity, and rising food and fuel prices.
Refugee pressures have exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the east of the country, and repeated attacks by non-state armed groups in the Lake Chad Basin region have contributed to increased displacements.
According to the UN-supported analysis, some 2.4 million people in Chad are currently food insecure, including 300,000 in acute state of hunger, and the situation is expected to worsen during the dry season, when the number of affected people reaches 3.3 million.
As the UN has pointed out, Chad’s 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan, estimated at $1.1 billion, has only been disbursed 6.6 per cent, or just $74 million.
Chad hosts more than 580,000 refugees from Sudan, the Central African Republic and Cameroon, and suffers from food insecurity challenges, needing assistance for 6 million of its population.
