Yesterday, Friday, a Tunisian court issued a decision to imprison the leader of the Republican Popular Union Party, Lotfi Al-Mraihi, for eight months on charges of tampering with electoral votes, and to prevent him from running in any future presidential elections.

Al-Mraihi’s lawyer, Omar Ismail, confirmed that his client will appeal the ruling, noting that the ruling carries political connotations aimed at excluding Al-Mraihi from the political arena.

The ruling sparked widespread criticism by opposition parties, who saw it as an attempt by the government to undermine the democratic process and facilitate Saeed’s victory in a second term.

These events come in the wake of a series of political moves by President Saied, who dissolved Parliament in 2021 and began ruling according to decrees, which the opposition described as reflecting an authoritarian nature.

While Saeed says that these measures were necessary to eliminate the rampant corruption that has permeated the political elite for years.

In 2011, Lotfi Al-Mraihi founded the Republican Popular Union Party and assumed the position of its Secretary-General, He participated in the National Constituent Assembly elections in 2011 for the Kasserine district, but he did not obtain a seat, He ran for the early presidential elections that were held in 2019, but he did not advance beyond the first round.
