A football referee was killed after being subjected to a violent attack by fans during a match in the Congo Cup, which brought together the OC Renaissance and Tanganyika teams.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regular time, and the referee resorted to penalty kicks, which led to Tanganyika winning 3-0.
Violence then broke out when a large number of fans jumped onto the field and chased the referee, who was unable to defend himself adequately.
The doctors were unable to help the referee, who was unconscious after the end of the match, and his death was later announced as a result of the violent attack to which he was subjected.
It is noteworthy that in February 2023, the referee of a match in the women’s football league in the Democratic Republic of the Congo was assaulted by female players during a match between the “Motema Pembe” and “Mazembe” teams.
