A teenager was shot dead by Australian police late on Saturday after a confrontation in the southern Australian suburb of Williton.

The incident began when police received a warning of the young man’s intention to commit violence, without being identified or located, according to state police commissioner Cole Blanche.

Blanche said that minutes after the warning, another emergency call was received stating that a person with a knife was running around a parking lot in the area.

Police camera footage shows the teenager refusing to throw the knife despite warnings from officers, who used tasers that did not achieve the desired effect.

The situation quickly developed into a direct confrontation, as the teenager continued to advance towards an officer who had to fire a single bullet that fatally wounded the teenager, and the teenager later died of his injuries in hospital.

One security official noted that initial indications suggest that the teenager acted alone, stressing the authorities’ keenness to reassure the public at this stage.

The teenager has been on follow-up in recent years as part of a “program to combat violence and extremism”, a program aimed at helping individuals who express convictions that raise concerns in society.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanesi later stressed that there was “no danger” after the incident, noting that Australia is a nation that loves peace and has no place for violent extremism.

The incident comes less than a month after another knife attack left six dead at a Sydney shopping mall.
