Albania’s population has fallen to 2,402,113 people, a decrease of 419,831 people from the 2011 census, according to the results of the latest national census published by the Albanian Institute of Statistics (Instat) on Friday.
The report indicated that the number of residents residing in the Republic of Albania as of September 18, 2023, amounted to 2,402,113 people, which reflects a continuous decline since the 1990s.
The institute attributed this decline largely to immigration, as the country has witnessed a continuous influx of immigrants since the fall of the communist regime led by Enver Hoxha in the 1990s.
Albania experienced continuous population growth before the 1990s, but the unprecedented economic crisis in 1997, a declining birth rate, and mass migration led to a change in this pattern.
The country has witnessed the migration of about 50,000 people annually since that period, which contributed to the significant decline in population.
The institute noted that the 2023 census represents the twelfth census during the past hundred years, stressing the continuation of the downward trend in population since the end of the twentieth century.
