Libya’s National Oil Corporation on Sunday began operating a new pipeline from the North Hamada oil field, where it is initially expected to transport 2,000 barrels per day.
The North Hamada field, which is operated by Nafusa Oil Operations, will gradually increase the pumping of oil into the pipeline, where it is expected to reach 25,000 barrels per day, and then start pumping by 4,500 barrels per day.
Production will be increased by placing production wells successively to reach 10,000 barrels per day in September 2024, as part of the first phase of the field’s development program.
The new pipeline, which is 50 kilometers long and transports oil production to the port of Mellita, has a design capacity of 70,000 barrels per day.
Libya reached an advanced position in terms of oil production among African countries last March, overtaking Nigeria to become the first African country in this field.
A report published earlier by the French magazine “Jeune Afrique” indicated that Libya recorded daily production of 1.24 million barrels in March, making it the first place on the continent.
