Mysterious ground cracks in Libya’s western region have raised concerns among locals about the possibility of earthquakes.

This phenomenon was first recorded last March, and its cause is not yet known, due to the lack of detailed official reports explaining its nature.

The new cracks were discovered in the area of Bir Ajaj ” Qatish”, about 70 kilometers southwest of Tripoli, and the Agricultural Police noticed that one of them extends for 800 meters and depths ranging from one to three meters.

Agricultural police believe floods may be the cause of the cracks, recommending the planting of certain tree species such as cypress and pine to promote soil stabilization.

Efforts are continuing in the Sbe’a area to analyses this phenomenon: the Environmental Sanitation Department at the Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Environment, and an administrative committee dealing with the groundwater phenomenon in Zliten.

News about these cracks has raised concerns among the local community, especially after the devastating earthquake that struck Morocco’s El Haouz region in September 2023, killing nearly 3,000 people.

Reports indicate the appearance of craters up to 60 meters deep in villages in Morocco, which some geologists have linked to the movement of tectonic plates.
