The suspicious appearance of the dead body of a lioness found by a young man in a village in the municipality of El Yashir in the eastern province of Bordj Bou Arreridj has sparked many debates and questions on social media.
Her photos spread on social media, raising a storm of questions amid a heated debate among Algerians about the origin of this animal, which is known to be usually located inside the zoo and not outside its walls.
Some have called for research and investigation into whether she escaped from the zoo or belonged to the extinct Atlantic lion breed in North Africa.
Several pages on “Facebook” expressed surprise at this incident, and the page “Green Bike” wrote: “Believe it or not, this happens in the village of Zenouna El Yashir, the wilaya of Bordj Bou Arreridj. A dead lioness, a lioness??”.
As for the page “Awlad Bordj Bou Arreridj”, it wrote: “Whoever is able to answer a lioness… He was able to bury her. But the question remains, is there a zoo and we don’t know? The lioness of Bordj Bou Arreridj creates the event through social media.”
This heated debate about the origins of the “lioness Bordj Bou Arreridj” came about given that, according to some historical sources, the last lion was hunted in Algeria in 1910 near the province of Souk Ahras in eastern Algeria.
The municipality of El Yashir in Bordj Bou Arreridj confirmed that its team moved to the location of the dead animal, and the procedures in force and technical backfilling were taken after being examined by the veterinarian, but it pointed out that the reasons and how the lioness was located in this place are still unknown.
