The Turkish company “Tosyali” signed an agreement with the Libyan United Iron and Steel Industry Company to establish a direct reduced iron (DRI) factory in the city of Benghazi, according to the Turkish newspaper “Daily Sabah”.
The newspaper’s report explained that the agreement grants the Turkish company the privilege of establishing a direct reduced iron factory using the “Medrex Flexi DRI” technology in Benghazi. It will operate using hydrogen as a source of clean energy. It will be implemented in three stages with a total production capacity of 8.1 million tons.
The first phase will begin with a production capacity of 2.7 million tons and is expected to meet the green steel needs of both the neighboring region and Europe.
The factory is expected to play an important role in supplying hot brick iron (HBI), which is the basic intermediate product most needed in the green transformation process.
Fouad Tosyali, Chairman of the Company’s Board of Directors, expressed his desire to expand investments on the African Mediterranean coast, noting that the region is considered an investment priority.
“Our company aims to create a positive economic, environmental and social impact in the countries in which it invests,” Tosyali said. “We will be very happy to offer our knowledge and experience in producing high-quality steel to Benghazi through this new complex.”
Tosyali added that ground surveys and engineering studies have been completed, and the construction and assembly of the plant will begin in the coming days.
Tosyali stressed that their integrated factory in Libya will produce high-quality, standard green steel products using advanced technology, innovation, research and development, and with low carbon emissions.
He explained that this will contribute to leading the transformation to a high-quality production ecosystem in the global steel industry.
For his part, Ahmed Jadallah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Libyan company, described the agreement as an important step for the manufacturing and development of the steel sector in Benghazi.
Jadallah stressed that this agreement will enhance the economic rapprochement between Libya and Turkey and contribute to strengthening the position of the two countries globally in the field of green steel and decarbonization.
