The novel “The Return: Fathers, Sons, and Middle Earth” by Libyan novelist and poet Hisham Matar was ranked among the 100 best books of the twenty-first century published by the New York Times.
The novel ranked 89th on the list chosen by 503 novelists, writers, poets, critics and other book lovers.
The novel “The Return,” published in 2016, revolves around Hisham Matar’s journey in search of his father, who was kidnapped in 1990 in Cairo and then transferred to a prison in Libya.
Former US President Barack Obama recommended reading “The Return” in 2018, stressing that it is “a beautifully crafted memoir that skillfully reflects the modern history of Libya, with the author’s tireless quest to search for his father, who disappeared in Gaddafi’s prisons.”
It is noteworthy that Hisham Matar was born in New York to Libyan parents, spent his childhood in Tripoli and Cairo, and lived most of his life in London. He recently won the “Orwell” Prize for Political Fiction for the year 2024 for his novel “My Friends.”
