A fire broke out yesterday evening, Friday, in one of the lighting towers at Alexandria Stadium during the match between the “Smouha” and “Pyramids” teams in the Egyptian League, which led to the match stopping at the 49th minute.

The fire began minutes before the second half and broke out in the electrical control room behind the stands, which resulted in the match being stopped and the fans of both teams landing on the field in turbulent conditions, some suffering from minor suffocation cases.

The match witnessed an early advantage for Smouha through a penalty kick taken by Hossam Hassan in the fifteenth minute, before Congolese player Feston Mayele equalized the score for Pyramids in stoppage time of the first half.

The referee waited about half an hour before officially deciding to stop the match, declaring that it could not be continued.

A statement issued by the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association stated that the match has been canceled permanently, and the association is scheduled to issue its final decision regarding the incident after receiving reports from the referee, observer, and stadium management.

It is noteworthy that Al-Smouha Club was founded in 1943 in the city of Alexandria and plays in the Premier League. It won the Egyptian League Cup title once in 2019, and the Egypt Cup title in 1967 and 1975, and also won the Egyptian Super Cup title in 2019.

As for the Pyramids Club, it was founded in 2009 in the city of Giza and plays in the Egyptian Premier League. It won the Egypt Cup twice in 2018 and 2020, and the Egyptian Super Cup twice in 2020 and 2021.
