The Chadian capital, N’Djamena, witnessed an accident on Tuesday evening, as a fire broke out in an army ammunition depot, resulting in a series of explosions.
Chadian Foreign Minister Abderrahmane Gholamallah confirmed that the accident claimed the life of at least one person and injured others.
Eyewitnesses in the surrounding areas reported that they saw three injured people in the street, and two of them were transported to the hospital using motorcycles.
Pictures of empty artillery shells falling on homes appeared in local media, sparking panic among residents.
One resident mentioned that his neighbor, who owned a store, was killed by a shell, and one of the witnesses told “Reuters”: “The strong explosions woke us up… Our house was shaking as if someone was shooting at us.” Then we saw a big fire in the army camp, heavy smoke and things exploding in the air… Artillery fire was flying above us.”
Another witness added that he saw flames and heard explosions for about an hour and indicated that smoke was spreading throughout the city.
It is worth noting that the site of the fire was only a few kilometers from the main international airport in Chad, but the authorities confirmed that the airport was not affected by the accident.
