A team of researchers in China has found a new species of cavefish, blind creatures, living deep in the Wujiyang River in Guizhou Province.
Known as the “Guiyang Golden-line Barbel”, this species does not have clear eyes, but rather appears as black dots under the skin, and its structure adapts to the perpetual darkness and food scarcity of its environment.
Researchers from Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with several wildlife agencies, found that these fish live in a unique environment consisting of carbonate rock and water-soluble limestone, which facilitates the formation of ground water ways.

These fish are characterized by a light pink color and a golden line that runs along their body and were found during a field survey of the underground river, where seven fish were collected for the study.
This species of fish is a window to understanding the evolution of organisms in isolated and harsh environments, as it shows unique adaptations such as extended arms that help find food, and scientists hope that ongoing research will provide better protection for these species from the threat of extinction.
The findings, published in the journal “Zoosystematics and Evolution”, highlight the scientific and ecological significance of the discovery, which explains aspects of ecological isolation and its impact on biological evolution.
