A Taliban official said Monday that a storm accompanied by heavy rains struck eastern Afghanistan, resulting in the death of at least 35 people and the injury of many people in Nangarhar province.

Siddiqullah Qureshi, director of the state’s Department of Information and Culture, explained that five members of the same family died when the roof of their house collapsed in the Sarkh Road area, and four other members of the family were injured.

Qureshi added that women and children were among the dead and wounded, and that the storm destroyed many properties and crops in different parts of the state.

In turn, Aminullah Sharif, head of the regional hospital in Nangarhar, confirmed that 207 injured people had been transferred to receive treatment in Jalalabad, the state capital, and neighboring areas, and that dozens of local residents gathered at the hospital to donate blood to the injured.

Earlier, the World Food Program reported that heavy rains in Afghanistan killed more than 300 people and destroyed thousands of homes, most of them in Baghlan province in the north of the country on May 10 and 11.

The program explained that the survivors have become without shelter, land, or a source of livelihood, which exacerbates the dire humanitarian situation in the country.
