6 + 6 committee charged with preparing election laws criticized the initiative of UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, which aims to bring together political leaders, in order to reach a consensus that leads to elections, and said that it is “illegal and illegitimate.”
The committee said in a statement that the role of the UN mission, according to the decision that stipulates establishing it, was to “support national institutions and not replace them,” and that the dialogue called for by the UN envoy “was not subject to objective criteria of selection and has no legal basis or cover so it would enable it to adopt any results such as This dialogue,” adding that the envoy “does not have the right to set paths that go beyond legitimacy and whose results become subject to challenge before the free Libyan judiciary.”
The 6+6 Committee called on the Libyans to defend the electoral laws issued by the House of Representatives last October, and their right to choose their representatives and the president of their country, and to stand united against guardianship plans and the imposition of foreign will.
The Committee also called on the House of Representatives and the State to engage in direct dialogue with the aim of reaching consensus.
