The Russian Emergencies Ministry announced on Sunday that 49 people, including 7 children, drowned on Saturday across Russia, at a time when the country is suffering from a severe heat wave.

The Ministry reported via the Telegram application that 65 drowning incidents had been recorded in bodies of water during the past 24 hours.

According to the Russian Information Agency, this number represents an increase of about 10 cases compared to those who died by drowning on the same day last year.

During the past week, Russia witnessed high temperatures unprecedented in more than a century, as Moscow broke the record set in 1917, and many cities in Russia witnessed temperatures exceeding 35 degrees Celsius.

On Friday, the Russian Hydrometeorological Service indicated on its website that it expected an exceptional rise in temperatures in the southern European parts of Russia at the beginning of the week, with temperatures in some areas reaching more than 40 degrees Celsius.
