A report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) revealed that Ethiopia is facing a displacement crisis with about 4.5 million people forced to leave their homes as of June.
The report indicated that more than half of the displaced were forced to leave their homes more than a year ago, while about 23% of them were displaced during the period between two to four years, and 11% were displaced five years ago or more.
The report noted that the United Nations has been able to facilitate the return of 3.3 million displaced people to their areas of origin since January 2022, but the situation remains worrying due to the continuing conflicts and the impact of natural disasters.
The report stressed the urgent need to provide sustainable support and find durable solutions to ensure the safe return of displaced people, support local integration, and maintain effective monitoring systems for the humanitarian situation in the country.
The ongoing conflict in the Tigray region between the Ethiopian government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) is the main cause of internal displacement in the country, causing the displacement of more than 2 million people, according to United Nations estimates.
Drought is another cause of displacement, affecting more than 8 million people and forcing them to leave their homes in search of food and water.
