The General Coordinator of Tunisian Health in the Holy Land, Hammadi Soussi, stated that 35 Tunisian pilgrims died in Mecca while performing Hajj rituals.

Al-Sousi also stated that 13 Tunisian pilgrims are currently receiving treatment in Saudi hospitals, explaining that among the deceased were five pilgrims who came within the official lottery system, while the other thirty arrived in Saudi Arabia on tourist visas, and the Tunisian mission had no information about their numbers or whereabouts.

Al-Sousi explained that the mission did not know the numbers of pilgrims on tourist visas or the entities that brought them, which led to many of them getting lost and being exposed to severe stress due to the high temperature, which reached 52 degrees Celsius.

He stated that the mission succeeded in transporting all Tunisian pilgrims to Arafat safely, and three ambulance centers were equipped to deal with sunstroke. Despite this, severe crowding and high heat led to deaths, sunstroke injuries, and many cases of fatigue among pilgrims.

The number of deaths among pilgrims this year exceeded 1,000, according to a tally compiled by Agence France-Presse from the authorities of the concerned countries and diplomats. According to preliminary data, more than half of the victims were without permits for Hajj and performed the ritual in very hot weather.
