At least 30 people have been killed in a tragic accident in eastern Congo, when a boat carrying passengers capsized near the Kamboli beach in Kindu, eastern Maniema province.
The Turkish “Anadolu” Agency reported, citing local officials, that the accident occurred on Monday evening, and that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing.
Maniema Governor Moussa Moussa Kabwankopi confirmed the incident, saying: “So far, 30 bodies have been found, and the search is still ongoing to determine the number of possible victims,” adding that the death toll could rise as there are a number of unidentified passengers.
In response to the disaster, the local government declared a three-day period of public mourning throughout the province, with flags flying at half-mast, and an investigation committee has been formed to determine the causes of the accident and determine responsibilities.
