Nigerian police have launched their investigation after a horrific attack on a mosque in the north of the country, announcing that at least 24 worshippers, including 4 children, were injured.
According to police spokesman Abdullah Haruna, the 38-year-old suspect admitted to carrying out the attack in the village of Gadan in the northern state of Kano, and Haruna said the motives for the attack were a long-running family dispute.
In the details of the incident, the spokesman explained that “preliminary forensic analysis indicates a gasoline explosion,” with investigations continuing to determine more details, and the police have cordoned off the scene, while the injured were transferred to a hospital in the state capital.
For its part, the “Daily Trust” reported that “worshippers were trapped inside the mosque, which made it difficult for them to escape the explosion.”
“The suspect had previously carried out attacks against people in the area because of the same family dispute,” the newspaper added.
The police statement concluded by stressing that “the dispute over the division of inheritance was the main reason behind the attack, as there were those who allegedly betrayed him at that moment in the mosque, and he did so to make his voice heard.”
