Niger’s army was ambushed, and 23 soldiers were killed during a combing operation near the border with Burkina Faso.
The defence ministry statement said the army was carrying out a combing operation in areas near May in Burkina Faso when its units were ambushed by “terrorists” and clashed with them over the previous two days.
According to the statement, more than a hundred “terrorists” armed with grenades and suicide cars attacked the military unit between the towns of Tegui and Pankellari.
The Tillabéri region is a stronghold of ISIS and al-Qaeda in the Sahel, where it is regularly targeted by armed attacks, despite the heavy deployment of counterterrorism forces.
