At least 18 people were killed, including women and children, and dozens were seriously injured in a series of suicide bombings that struck the city of Gwoza in the Nigerian state of Borno.
The explosions occurred yesterday afternoon, Saturday, as the city witnessed three separate explosions in a short time, which sparked terror and panic in the hearts of residents.
The first attacks were particularly violent, as they targeted a wedding party, carried out by a young woman who was carrying a child, and resulted in the killing of six attendees. This was followed by two other bombings in the same area and near the General Hospital, which led to more casualties.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, but the method used is reminiscent of the operations of the terrorist group “Boko Haram”, which has a long history of carrying out similar attacks in the region, which shares a border with Cameroon.
The head of the local rescue services, Barkindo Saidu, said that the wounded with serious injuries were transferred to the regional capital, Maiduguri, to receive the necessary treatment. Saido confirmed that the medical and security teams are working in full swing to help the victims and restore security in the region.
It is noteworthy that the Global Terrorism Index 2024 indicated that Nigeria witnessed 61 terrorist attacks during the year 2023, resulting in the deaths of 1,283, while some sources estimate that more than 4,000 people were killed in terrorist acts in Africa during the year 2023.
