The Chadian court acquitted 15 people accused of involvement in the disturbances that took place at the Chadian intelligence headquarters last February, sentenced four others to ten years in prison, and referred six to the children’s court.
Among those acquitted was Saleh Deby Itno, the immediate uncle of current interim President Mohamed Deby.
The clashes that took place around the intelligence headquarters resulted in the killing of Yahya Dilo, leader of the “Socialist Party Without Borders,” in an attack targeting his party’s headquarters on February 28.
Dilo, who was a potential candidate for the presidential elections, is considered a prominent opponent of the current regime, and the authorities accused him of inciting violence.
The Chadian government denied any responsibility for Dilo’s assassination and promised to open an international investigation to uncover the circumstances of the incident, but it did not open the investigation even though four months had passed since the events.
After the unrest, Saleh Deby appeared on national television, handcuffed, accompanied by other defendants, in an attempt to prove their involvement in the events that led to the killing of Delo and several other people under mysterious circumstances.
