The strangest municipal elections are taking place in the small village of Ingria in the heart of the Italian Alps, near Turin, with two-thirds of its population participating as candidates.
The village’s population does not exceed 46 people, while the number of candidates for the local elections is 30 people, making the elections there among the most unusual municipal elections in the world.
The current mayor of Ingria, Igor De Santis, faces a major challenge in his quest to win a fourth term, according to a report by the British newspaper “The Guardian”.
The family atmosphere of these elections adds a special touch, as De Santis’ mother joined the list of his competitor, Renato Polito, whose list was distinguished by the inclusion of a large number of women.
Ingria is located in the Suana Valley, and the village faces problems such as population migration due to the lack of services and the difficulties of the harsh winter. The classification of the village among the most beautiful villages in Italy in 2022 also led to an increase in the number of tourists, which increased pressure on its limited resources.
