Two migrants have been killed and 34 missing after their boat sank off the coast of Zarzis, Tunisia, while trying to cross the Mediterranean towards Italy.

The Tunisian National Guard said the boat sailing from Libya was carrying 70 people, 34 of whom were rescued, and the Tunisian coastguard earlier this week recovered five bodies of migrants off Tunisian shores.

According to the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, an organization concerned with migration, a record 1,313 migrants died or went missing last year.

As weather conditions improve at the end of winter, the influx of African migrants in boats bound for Italy increases.
