Last Thursday, the capital, Tripoli, hosted a meeting of the economic working group affiliated with the Berlin Process, at the initiative of the European Union.
The United Nations Support Mission in Libya, which supervised the organization, explained in a statement on Saturday that the main goal is to enhance stability and create sustainable economic opportunities that benefit the Libyan people.
In this meeting, the mission brought together the co-chairs from Egypt, the European Union, the United States and representatives of the United Nations, to discuss and support the financial and economic challenges facing Libya, and the discussions focused on achieving economic stability and providing opportunities for citizens.
In a related context, the head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Muhammad al-Manfi, met with ambassadors of European Union countries, where security and economic issues were discussed.
The ambassadors stressed the need to combat financial corruption that threatens stability in the Mediterranean region and the African Sahel and stressed the importance of holding municipal elections as a step towards strengthening the political process in the country.
The need to support Libya in removing fighters, mercenaries, and foreign forces from the country was also stressed, and to work to distribute the budget and resources in a transparent and fair manner, while supporting the national reconciliation project led by the Presidential Council.
In another meeting that included the Acting UN Envoy to Libya, Stephanie Khoury, and the US Special Envoy, Richard Norland, the importance of unifying international positions was stressed to overcome the current political impasse and facilitate a comprehensive political process led and owned by Libya.
The Berlin Process Economic Working Group was formed in 2020, and its main goal is to support the independence of the National Oil Corporation in Libya and ensure that all Libyans benefit from their resources. This group includes “Egypt, the European Union, and the United States of America,” in addition to the United Nations Support Mission in Libya.
