The Ambassador of the European Union to Libya, Nicola Orlando, expressed the Union’s continued commitment to support Libya’s efforts to protect its rich cultural heritage and ensure its sustainability for future generations.
Orlando praised the success of the EULEAD initiative, which was launched in 2019 and contributed to strengthening Libyan capacities in the field of archaeological and heritage conservation.
The initiative has made significant progress in the archaeological area of Sabratha, which is close to being removed from UNESCO’s list of endangered sites.
In a related context, the European Ambassador revealed the launch of two new program aimed at strengthening the partnership between the European Union and Libya in the field of heritage protection, including financial and technical support to help protect Libyan archaeological sites and build local capacities for heritage conservation.
EULEAD is an EU-funded initiative that aims to support institutional development in Libya, and has been implemented in several phases, starting with the implementation of training courses in the field of cultural heritage protection.
Since 2020, the program has contributed to strengthening the overall capacity of the Explosives Bureau within the Criminal Investigation Department, including emergency trauma care and first aid.
