A total of 311 people have been killed in floods in Baghlan province in northern Afghanistan, according to a preliminary toll announced by the Afghan government.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) earlier reported more than 200 people killed in Friday’s floods.

The provincial authorities in charge of managing natural disasters in Afghanistan said that monsoon rains caused flash flooding in various areas of the northeastern province of Baghlan.

The floods destroyed several homes in Burka and Nahrain districts, and four districts in the province were severely damaged, as local Afghan authorities try to find the missing and have requested urgent assistance from the central government.

According to local sources, more than a hundred people died in Baghlan province, while another hundred people died in the province while more than two thousand houses were destroyed in the two districts.

A number of deaths were recorded in six other provinces, based on figures from the Afghan National Natural Disaster Management Authority.

This year’s floods, which come under more than usual rainfall in the spring, have affected other provinces of the highly vulnerable country, especially in Ghor (west) and Badakhshan (northeast), causing significant financial losses.

Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed to Agence France-Presse on Saturday morning that hundreds of deaths had been recorded in a number of provinces.
